SCALP HEALTH

Scalp health is hair wealth.

The bacteria commonly associated with dandruff and scalp itchiness is called Malassezia. Malassezia is a type of yeast-like fungus that naturally resides on the scalp of most individuals, including those with African hair. However, in some cases, an overgrowth of Malassezia can lead to scalp issues such as dandruff, itching, and irritation.

Malassezia thrives in environments rich in sebum, which is the natural oil produced by the sebaceous glands on the scalp. This fungus feeds on the oils produced by the scalp, breaking them down into byproducts that can irritate the skin and trigger an immune response, leading to inflammation and flaking.

For individuals with African hair, the tightly coiled structure of the hair shaft can make it challenging for natural oils to travel from the scalp to the ends of the hair. As a result, the scalp may become dry, leading to an overproduction of sebum as the body tries to compensate for the lack of moisture. This excess sebum can create an ideal environment for Malassezia to thrive, exacerbating dandruff and itchiness.

The best solution to address this issue involves a multi-faceted approach:

Use Anti-Fungal Products

These ingredients have anti-fungal properties that can help reduce the population of Malassezia on the scalp, thereby alleviating dandruff and itchiness. (Ethentics scalp refresh and repair treatment.)

Maintain Scalp Hygiene

Regularly wash the scalp with our gentle, sulfate-free repair shampoo to remove excess oil, dirt, and dead skin cells. Be sure to rinse the hair thoroughly to prevent product buildup, which can exacerbate scalp issues.

Avoid Harsh Products

Steer clear of harsh hair care products that contain drying ingredients like alcohol or sulfates, as these can strip the scalp of its natural oils and exacerbate dryness and irritation.

Practice Good Hair Care Habits

Be gentle when handling the hair and scalp, avoiding excessive scratching or rubbing, which can further irritate the skin. Use wide-tooth combs or your fingers to detangle hair gently, and avoid tight hairstyles that can pull on the scalp.

Moisturise the Scalp

While it may seem counterintuitive, keeping the scalp moisturized can actually help reduce oil production. Opt for lightweight, non-comedogenic moisturizers or scalp oils that won't weigh down the hair or clog the pores.

By implementing these strategies, individuals with African hair can effectively manage dandruff and scalp itchiness caused by an overgrowth of Malassezia, promoting a healthier scalp and hair environment.
